Jean-Paul Malaval is a writer of "terroir" fiction, in which the land is a central character. In Malaval's case, it is the Dordogne region of France, where many of his novels are set. In this video, filmed in the village of Vars-sur-Roseix where Malaval is the mayor, he describes how he creates his novels: "When I create characters, I want the story to live in a very rich current of history so that it offers a sort of reflection to modern readers. I find it teaches me a lot about myself, as well. When you write a scene in the trenches of World War I, we are there. The author is there. And that is thrilling as a writer." Explore Malaval's world in this interview.
