As co-editor in chief of the Northwestern Undergraduate Research Journal (NURJ), Helen Zhu brought together her interests in journalism, design and STEM. For two years, she also served as editor-in-chief of the yearbook. “I found a love for design and photography and saw it as a way to document memories for years to come,” she says. “Something that I will be able to look back on and show my kids and grandkids." Zhu majored in computer science, earning a minor in chemistry and a certificate in financial economics. She joined the Chinese Student Association in her first year on campus and eventually became president of the group and co-chair of Celebrasia, the annual performance organized by a group of Asian cultural organizations. “I really can't think of another place that would allow me to have all the academic interests that I did,” Zhu says, “and still be involved in publications ... and the journalism community here.”
