Meet Dr. Alberto Ortiz Díaz, an interdisciplinary scholar, historian of the Caribbean and Hybrid Fellow for 2024-2024 of Rooted + Relational!
A former archivist at the General Archive of Puerto Rico and PhD graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he's currently an Assistant Professor of history at the University of Texas at Arlington and a 2024-25 American Council of Learned Societies Fellow.
His first book, Raising the Living Dead: Rehabilitative Corrections in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean (University of Chicago Press, 2023), examines the complex history of corrections in Puerto Rico. His current project, Incarceration, Reentry, and Afro-Puerto Rican Worlds, explores the experiences of incarcerated Afro-Puerto Ricans in the 1940s-50s, emphasizing the racial and diasporic nuances in Puerto Rican Studies.
Founded in 1973 by a coalition of students, faculty, and activists, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College (CENTRO) is the largest university-based research institute, library, and archive dedicated to the Puerto Rican experience in the United States.
