Meet Dr. Emma Amador, Assistant Professor of History at the University of Connecticut and Research Associate for 2024-2025 of Rooted + Relational!
Dr. Amador’s work is at the forefront of Puerto Rican, Latina, and gender history in the U.S. She is the author of “The Politics of Care: Puerto Rican Women Organizing for Social Justice” after 1917, coming in May 2025 from Duke University Press.
Currently, Dr. Amador is also working on her second book, “Bright Futures: Antonia Pantoja and the Practice of Ethnic Studies.” This biography of Afro-Puerto Rican civil rights activist Antonia Pantoja highlights her impact on bilingual education, Puerto Rican Studies, and the broader Ethnic Studies movement.
Founded in 1973 by a coalition of students, faculty, and activists, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College (CENTRO) is the largest university-based research institute, library, and archive dedicated to the Puerto Rican experience in the United States.
