Meet Dr. Cristina Pérez Jiménez, Associate Professor of English at Manhattan College, specializing in U.S. Latinx and Caribbean studies, race, migration, and ethnic social movements and Research Associate for 2024-2025 of Rooted + Relational!
She co-edited Manhattan Tropics/Trópico en Manhattan and has published in leading journals like Revista Hispánica Moderna, Small Axe, CENTRO Journal, and more. Currently, Cristina is completing her book “Here to Stay: The Making of Latinx New York,” exploring NYC’s Latinx community in the 1930s and 1940s, and working on a public digital humanities project, The Latinx Catskills. This project redistributes the Catskills as a hub of Latinx culture, uncovering the stories of Spaniards, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, and others who lived or vacationed there from the late 19th century to the 1970s.
Founded in 1973 by a coalition of students, faculty, and activists, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College (CENTRO) is the largest university-based research institute, library, and archive dedicated to the Puerto Rican experience in the United States.
