Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu is one of India’s most extraordinary architectural and religious landmarks — but its story is far more complicated than simply being a 1,000-year-old temple.
The temple has stood on sacred ground for centuries, surviving destruction, fire, political upheaval and repeated reconstruction. While parts of the complex date back centuries, much of the magnificent structure visitors see today was built and expanded during the Vijayanagara and Nayak periods.
With its towering gopurams, hundreds of sculpted figures and the famous Thousand Pillar Hall, Meenakshi Temple represents a remarkable tradition of rebuilding and renewal.
