These guys did do away with personal property on the grounds that God said all men are created equal, so communism is the quickest and easiest comparison, but strictly speaking van Leiden was not a communist. Also there's bound to be countless instances of bias against van Leiden and friends, so take everything you hear with a grain of salt.
1:11 Melchior Hoffman was significantly less occult than this, but he did believe the world was going to end and his name does sound the same as the Dark Lord himself.

Though he was involved in the process of running the town, his actions didn't have a huge impact on the direction of the story and so he was omitted for the sake of time. Although if you're the sort of person wondering what happened to Knipperdolling you probably listened to that first.
