On June 26, 2024, at approximately 4:41 a.m., LVMPD Dispatch received a call from a store
manager regarding a male, later identified as 62-year-old Robert Kunhart, outside of a business
threatening citizens with a knife in the 6400 block of Boulder Highway.
Sergeant Ashley Ravelo and Officer Johnny Patino along with several officers arrived and
located Kunhart in the parking lot of the business who was holding a knife and appeared
agitated. Officers issued verbal commands for the male to drop the knife which he ignored and
then proceeded to walk toward the front doors of the store. Officers followed Kunhart and
discovered he was armed with two knives, one in each hand. Officers utilized multiple less-lethal
options to prevent the male from going into the business which had several citizens inside. The
less-lethal options were ineffective, and he continued to walk toward officers while holding the
two knives in an elevated position.
Kunhart then charged toward Sergeant Ravelo causing her and Officer Patino to discharge their
duty weapons, striking him. Officers provided life-saving measures until medical personnel
arrived and the suspect was transported to the hospital where he is in stable condition.
The investigation of this incident remains ongoing. An examination of this incident is being
conducted by the LVMPD Critical Incident Review Team. This review focuses on policy, tactics,
and training as it relates to this use of force.
