The high resolution but beautifully rounded Vista lenses allowed me to make full use of the 8.2K 17:9 scan mode of the Venice 2. The minimal focus breathing and near total lack of chromatic aberrations make these lenses a delight to work with. Plus they have a very slightly warm look that I find very pleasing given a slight vintage feel to the footage. All the lenses in the set are t1.5 allowing for a very shallow DoF.
The two timelapse shots were shot at 8.2K and then a post production push in added. Even viewed in 4K there is no obvious loss of image quality as the image is expanded to up to 2x. The day footage was shot at 800 ISO and the night footage made use of the second higher base ISO of 3200.

I also decided to test the 24mm f1.4 GM lens. The A1 really impressed me, the 8K footage the camera produces is packed with detail, low noise and high dynamic range. It did an excellent job of capturing the rich "golden hour" colours that you get almost all day long. The video has been uploaded in 8K and HDR10 (ST2084/Rec2020). So, if you are lucky enough to have an 8K HDR monitor or TV you can view it in it's full glory, or at least as good as YouTubes compression will allow.
The shot at 1:12 secs is of some rather beautiful Polar Stratospheric or Nacreous clouds. These clouds only form when the upper atmosphere is extremely cold and can only be seen when the sun is between 1 and 6 degrees below the horizon, so they are quite rare. But when they are seen they are incredibly bright and they really are all those different colours.
The temperature was below -20c most of the time and got down to -34c the day we went dog sledding.

I'd like to apologize for the mono audio, this is entirely my fault, I was using a dual channel radio mic receiver on the camera but only a single channel lapel mic. That's why there is noise on one channel. It's nothing to do with the Accsoon, just me sending it duff audio and doing this live without listening to the stream. I could cheat and download the video to remove the empty audio track. But I feel its better to leave the live feed hear as it is.
At 09.12 I comment that it uses 5G - What I mean is that it has 5Ghz WiFi as well as 2.5Ghz Wifi for the connection between the CineEye and the phone or tablet. 5Ghz WiFi is preferred where possible for better quality connections and better range.

Just how good is XAVC-I?ingenioustv by Alister Chapman2021-01-14 | I often hear people saying that XAVC-I isn't good enough or that you MUST use ProRes or some other codec for the best image quality. My own experience is that XAVC-I is actually a really good codec and recording to ProResHQ only ever makes the very tiniest (if any) difference to the finished production. I've tested this many time in the 8 years or so that I have been using XAVC-I but to illustrate my own findings I decided to put together this (rather boring) video.
It was shot with a Sony FX6 using internal XAVC-I (class 300) on an SD card along side an external recording using ProResHQ on a Shogun 7.
I deliberately chose to use Cine EI and S-Log3 at the cameras high base ISO of 12,800 as noise will stress any codec that little bit harder. Making this test just that little bit tougher. The slightly higher noise level also allows you to see how each codec handles noise more easily.
A sample clip of each codec was place in the time line (DaVinci Resolve) and a caption added. This was then rendered out, he ProRes HQ filess rendered using ProRes HQ and the XAVC-I files rendered to XAVC-I. So for most of the examples seen the XAVC-I files have been copied and re-encoded 5 times plus the encoding to the file uploaded to YouTube, plus YouTubes own encoding, a pretty tough test.
Because in most workflows I don't believe many people will use XAVC-I in post production as an intermediate codec I also repeated the tests with the XAVC-I rendered to ProRes HQ 5 times as this is probably more representative of a typical real world workflow. These examples are shown at the end.
Of course the YouTube compression will restrict your ability to see some of the differences between the two codecs. But, this is how many people will be distributing their content. Even if not via YouTube via other highly compressed means, so it's not an unfair test. Looking at the original clips in my studio it is very hard to spot the differences.
Where the s709 LUT has been added it was added AFTER each further copy of the clip, so this is really a "worst case scenario", the LUT being added to the lowest quality S-Log3.
Overall in the end the ProResHQ and XAVC-I are remarkably similar in performance. In the 300% blow up you can see differences between the XAVC-I that is 6 generations old compared to the 6th generation ProResHQ. But the differences are very, very hard to spot and going 6 generations of XAVC-I is unlikely in most normal workflows. In the same test where the XAVC was rendered to ProResHQ for each post production generation any difference is incredibly hard to find even when magnified 300%.
I am not claiming that XAVC-I Class 300 is as good as ProResHQ, but I think it is worth considering what you need when shooting. Do you really want to have to use an external recorder, do you really want to have to deal with files that are 3 to 4 times larger. Do you want to have to remember to switch recording methods between slow motion and normal speeds? For most productions I very much doubt that the end viewer will ever be able to tell the difference between material shot using XAVC-I class 300 and ProResHQ, even if watching with their face inches from a very large screen.Chrosziel FX6 Kit and Chrosziel Quick Lock Plateingenioustv by Alister Chapman2021-01-12 | In this video I take a look at the Chrosziel FX6 kit which includes a top cheese plate, a lightweight base plate and an extension arm for the hand grip. We stay in cabins up on the Arctic Finnmarksvidda. When the sky is clear we can usually see the Northern lights. During the day we explore the area by snow scooter and dog sled. This video is a selection of shots from this years trip. All shot with a Sony PXW-FX9 mostly with Sony lenses. At times the temperature got down to -34c. So I made extensive use of autofocus to avoid having to take off my mittens. The sun rise, sunset and Aurora shots were shot using the cameras built in Intervalometer (interval record). The Aurora wasn't very bright on this trip so I used a 32 frame slow shutter and 5000 ISO. The way the FX9 picks up stars is amazing for a video camera and a relatively short shutter. The Aurora was barely visible to the naked eye. The PXW-FX9 did an amazing job capturing it. The camera was set to S-Cinetone, High Base ISO and 6400 ISO. Shooting with a 32 frame slow shutter, so about a 1.3 second exposure and interval record 1 frame every 2 seconds. This is the result straight from the camera. I've never seen a video camera capture stars like this with so little noise. I have not done any additional noise reduction. This camera makes shooting the Aurora incredibly easy! Lens was a Sigma 20mm Art f1.4.Real World FX9 Sample Footageingenioustv by Alister Chapman2019-10-17 | This footage was shot to test how the FX9 will perform in a real world scenario. Nothing setup, nothing staged, just a couple of cheap Sony E-Mount lenses (50mm f1.8 and 28-70mm f3.5-f5.6) and a pleasant evening in Windsor. To test how the autofocus would perform on a real world shoot I switched the camera to AF with Face Priority before leaving home and left it that way for the entire shoot. The only shot where manual focus was used was the 120fps shot of the swans where AF can't be used.
I also wanted to explore how easy it would be to cut together footage using custom mode and S-Cinetone along with material shot with S-Log3 with the s709 LUT applied. I think you can see that it's no problem and both look really good together.
There is no grading, no colour correction. This is how the material looks straight from the camera or in the case of the CinEI and S-Log3 material how it looks after adding the s709 Venice LUT.
