After seven months in their studios, two master-apprentice duos brought their finished works to Milan Design Week for the close of this year’s Homo Faber Fellowship. The final episode of Mazda Craft Journeys reveals what they created.
That kind of dedication is something Mazda understands. Craftsmanship is at the heart of the brand, and its own Takumi craftspeople spend years mastering their disciplines. This is why Mazda supports the Fellowship: to help that knowledge pass between generations of artisans.
Master paper sculptor Kuniko Maeda and her apprentice Momoka Ienaga present Liminal, a sculpture in paper, silk and textile that explores adaptation and symbiosis. Master textile pleater Harumi Sugiura and her apprentice Marcella Giannini showcase Resonances, a pleated work coloured with pigments they made from plants, using Katazome, a Japanese stencil-dyeing technique.
The finished pieces are only part of the story. Marcella found the focus she had been searching for, and the confidence to bring her own voice to the work. Momoka discovered a belief in herself she had never felt before. Kuniko learned that communication takes effort, even between artisans who share a language. These are lessons any Takumi would recognise.
