‘In A Landscape’, Richter’s ninth studio album, is set to release on Friday 6th September via Decca Records. The new album marks a significant evolution in Richter’s musical journey, as he delves deeper into the themes of optimism and human emotion accompanied by an innovative exploration of electronic sounds and field recordings. It is a record about reconciling polarities, bringing together the electronic and the acoustic, the human and the natural world, the big questions of life and the quiet pleasures of living - a fleeting self-portrait of a musician in constant motion.
‘In A Landscape’ employs homogenous musical language to Richter’s seminal album ‘The Blue Notebooks’, with the two albums in a way bookending this significant chapter of Richter’s life and career. It is presented as an open conversation with the audience, asking them to consider the dualities in their own life, what personal stories come to mind while listening and, ultimately, serving as an invitation to imagination.
‘In A Landscape’ is Richter’s first solo album recorded at Studio Richter Mahr, the minimalist, eco-conscious creative retreat designed and operated by Richter and his wife, visual artist Yulia Mahr. Shifting focus to Richter’s immediate surroundings, ‘In A Landscape’ marks out a psychic space in which to meditate on the present while recognising a lifetime of artistic influence, from Bach and Purcell to the poetry of Keats, Wordsworth and Anne Carson. Richter also found inspiration in a number of books which he was reading at the time of writing ‘In A Landscape’, with many of the track titles on the album named after lines from literature and some of his own treasured paperbacks pictured on the album cover.

“SLEEP: Tranquility Base” is a revision which offers a glimpse into the original SLEEP-material from an electronic perspective. “Tranquility Base” is the site on the Moon where, in July 1969, humans landed and walked on a celestial body other than Earth for the first time.
With this in mind, the EP functions as a vessel that disconnects and travels through the body of work, allowing art to provide something which resembles peace within ourselves. – Max Richter
“I’ve already been following Max Richters work for many years now, so I felt all the more honoured to be able to do a remodel for him. I’ve tried to combine the original, which is played largely on classical instruments, with an electronic score, kind of transposing it into an electronic sound world. I derived my inspiration from early science-fiction novels by Isaac Asimov and Philip K. Dick. Dick’s “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” and its notion of a computer that dreams and possesses an independent consciousness (keyword ‘ghost in the machine’) was a theme that particularly resonated, which I’ve tried to bring out in the remodel.” – Alva Noto
“SLEEP is a kind of counter argument to what’s going on in the world. [My partner] Yulia and I have talked about it as protest music. It’s a sort of alternative proposition to how things could be or how things are… towards the world we’re living in and helps to shine a light on the things we can do better. The original thing which made us want to make this piece was a sense of being oversaturated – with data, with information – overstimulated… All of that is just worse now, there’s more of the same – much more of the same – and that makes the piece continually relevant.” – Max Richter

“It’s like SLEEP distilled.” That’s how Max Richter describes Sleep Circle, his new album marking the tenth anniversary of his landmark project SLEEP. Sleep Circle is a hallucinatory 90-minute trip into the hypnagogic state – the liminal space between wakefulness and sleep in which dreams begin to take shape. The process of choosing Sleep Circle’s 24 tracks was informed by the insights Richter gained from live performances of an abridged version of his monumental opus. With its more intimate and focused approach to SLEEP, the new album highlights compositions such as “Dream 11 / Moth-Like Stars” and “Non-Eternal” in a structural arc that mirrors the natural 90-minute REM cycle. Recorded at Studio Richter Mahr in Oxfordshire, Sleep Circle showcases Max Richter’s unique ability to translate profound human experience into music, offering listeners a space to slow down and reconnect with their inner selves.
