“Way of the World” is a brooding, atmospheric track from the 1989 album Max Q, the experimental collaboration between INXS frontman Michael Hutchence and producer Ollie Olsen. Blending alternative rock with electronic textures and industrial-leaning production, the song captures the darker, more experimental side of late-80s alternative music.
“Way of the World” appears on the 1989 self-titled album Max Q, a one-off project created by Michael Hutchence of INXS and Australian producer Ollie Olsen. The album emerged from the creative energy surrounding the Australian film Dogs in Space, where the two first collaborated.
Unlike the polished stadium sound of INXS at the time, Max Q explored a much moodier sonic palette. “Way of the World” reflects that approach with layered electronic production, hypnotic rhythms, and Hutchence’s distinctive, emotive vocal delivery. The track sits somewhere between alternative rock, synth-driven experimentation, and the darker edges of late-80s electronic music.
Although the Max Q project never became a long-term band, the album has developed a cult following among fans interested in Hutchence’s more experimental work outside INXS.
