Germany has its own version of stuffed pasta — and it comes with a fascinating backstory. Maultaschen are Swabia’s most iconic comfort food: pasta dough filled with meat, vegetables, herbs and tradition. In this video, we visit a family-run inn in southern Germany to learn how authentic Swabian Maultaschen are made — from scratch — and why they’re nicknamed “little God cheaters.”
Legend has it that a monk once hid meat inside the dough during Lent, hoping God wouldn’t notice. Whether that’s true or not, one thing is certain: Maultaschen are deeply rooted in German food culture and loved across the country.
