Forget the clickbaity title — the truth is, Matthew McConaughey had one of the kindest presences on set and was exceedingly nice to the crowd during the entire week I was there.

This was during the filming of Amistad in the 1990s. I was 14 years old, got to take the week off school (thanks, Mom), and spent it watching behind the scenes of a real film production — something I’ll never forget.

It was very cool to see McConaughey at this moment in his career — post-Dazed and Confused, but before he hit massive fame — and he still came over to genuinely interact with the crowd. His energy and presence were palpable, and it was even better to see the small but meaningful gesture of him making sure to return the pen after each interaction.

This video is just being posted as a funny nostalgic look back — a moment in time captured on video when a 14-year-old boy put a camera closer to Matthew McConaughey’s face than any known director… and he didn’t look at me once. He was in the zone.
