Matt Goodwin is blaming Restore Britain after the Greens won in Dover — even though the combined right-wing vote hit 55%. Was that fair, or is Reform still refusing to look at its own offer?In this video I break down Goodwin’s post after last night’s Dover council by-election in Guston, Kingsdown and St Margaret’s-at-Cliffe. The Greens took the seat from the Conservatives on 28.8%. Reform came second on 27.5%. The Tories collapsed to 17.1%. Labour fell to 14.6%. Rupert Lowe’s Restore Britain scored 10.7% in its first local by-election there.
Goodwin’s line is simple: “Vote Restore, get the left.” He says Restore and the Tories handed the seat to the left and will do it again at a general election. I go through why that arithmetic is weaker than it looks. Not every Conservative or Restore Britain voter would have switched to Reform UK.
Some Restore supporters think Nigel Farage is a traitor. Reform keeps telling other parties to stand aside — and will not do it itself.The relationship between Reform UK and Restore Britain is still frosty. A pact in the short or medium term looks unlikely. Tactical voting is also easier on the left than on the right. Insulting Restore Britain voters in public is not how you build a united front.
