How can we use math like magic, and see through the ground like dowsing? In this video we talk about simple kriging. This is a data driven method for estimating the amount of ore or water or other geological quantities in a new location based on previous samples. Simple kriging divines where you can find new water sources, which makes it a sort of mathematically motivated dowsing method.
We code up Simple Kriging in MATLAB, and use the Gaussian kernel function as the source of the covariance matrix.
