‘Creating a truly low‑carbon construction industry is an uphill battle, but few architects are facing it as head‑on as Material Cultures,’ Reuben J Brown writes of the Peter Davey Prize-winning practice.
Founded by George Massoud with Paloma Gormley and Summer Islam, the London-based organisation combines architecture with materials research and educational programmes to engender a transformation in architectural production oriented around bio-based materials.
‘This material palette not only ensures a low carbon footprint’, writes J Brown, ‘but also creates characterful and comfortable environments.’ During a visit to the nearly completed Wolves Lane Centre on a grizzly autumn day, ‘with the heat pumps off, the buildings felt dry and warm, and were scented by freshly dried clay.’
