A racing/driving game featuring Mario and Luigi as the drivers/racers. Unlike the first game in the series that had top-down behind-the-car view, it is more similar to Outrun and Rad Racer done in third-person perspective view with three long race tracks having a different variety types of terrain making it feel like a real rally race. Each of the race tracks has multiple routes to the finish line, requiring you to find the best path to victory. There are three different cars to choose from which are; the speedy Kattabi coupe, the balanced Yonque truck, or the rugged Monster buggy.
To beat each of the race courses, you must reach each checkpoint within a certain time limit. If you reach the crossing line too late, the time is reduced from the time bank. If the time bank runs out, the game is over. Reaching the checkpoint before the time limit successfully adds extra time to your time bank. You can also collect red hot exclamation marks scattered throughout the tracks. When you collect enough red hot exclamation marks to fill the dash meter, you get temporary access to the hot dash, which is the fifth gear that increases the speed giving the fastest speed as possible. Before each race, you are asked to place a repair point somewhere on the track to allow you to repair any damage done to your car, so long as you pick a route that leads you past the checkpoint. If you take too much damage, the game is over.
The game supports a 3D video with 3D glasses with Famicom system having 3D support giving you the real feeling of the depth of the race course in a landscape. This also allowed players to submit their best times via Famicom Disk Fax Kiosks located in various stores for a chance to win a Disk-kun stationary set. Unlike the first game, the game does have an ending. You must beat all three races with all three cars to unlock the ending.
Like its predecessor, this game was an inspiration and influence on the Mario Kart games in the 1990s.
