In this video, I walk you through how to build a custom period slicer in Power BI
We often need to analyze data beyond just the current month like last quarter, last 12 months, or year to date. While you can do this using multiple DAX measures, it quickly becomes messy and hard to manage.
So instead, I show you a smarter approach that can completely change the way your reports behave.
We start by understanding the problem and setting up a simple model. Then I demonstrate why creating separate measures for each time period is not scalable, especially when you have multiple metrics like sales, units, and profit.
The real magic begins when we move to Calculation Groups. This is where everything becomes dynamic, clean, and reusable. You will learn how to:
● Create custom time periods like Last Quarter, Last 12 Months, YTD, and more
● Apply the logic across any measure without rewriting DAX again and again
● Keep your model simple while making your report more powerful
I also explain the logic behind everything so you are not just copying steps, but actually understanding how it works and how you can customize it for your own projects.
