Operating from the tiny, converted escort carrier HMS Audacity in the brutal Bay of Biscay, he flew Grumman Wildcats against heavily armed Focke-Wulf Condors and menacing U-boat wolfpacks, ultimately surviving a devastating torpedo attack that sank his ship in the dead of winter.

Transitioning from combat to the perilous world of test flying, he achieved the "mission impossible" of landing a twin-engine De Havilland Mosquito on a carrier deck for a top-secret bombing project. His expertise placed him at the bleeding edge of aerodynamics, working at Farnborough to solve the deadly phenomenon of high-altitude compressibility that was destroying American bombers, ultimately helping unlock the true potential of the P-51 Mustang.
