![How to Compress Irons & Take a Divot - Single Plane Swing
How do you get shaft lean, compress your irons, and take a divot - without trying to hit down on the ball? In this lesson, Todd Graves shows you the simple Single Plane Swing setup that makes it happen automatically.
Heres the short answer: its the SAME swing you use with the driver youre just changing your setup. Move to a narrower stance and play the ball about five inches off the inside of your lead foot. That setup puts your shoulders, arms and hands slightly ahead of the ball at address. From there, when your body rotates, the hands naturally lead into impact thats your shaft lean. The result is real compression and a shallow divot you never had to try for. As Moe Norman put it: Bacon strips, not pork chops.

The two mistakes Todd sees most:
―
Trying to force the hands forward (manipulating instead of letting your setup do it)
Getting the stance too wide with short irons so you hit it thin, top it, or cant compress it
Fix your positions
―
which leaves you behind the ball,
ball position, stance width, and the shoulder position they create and compression takes care of itself. Same single plane swing, just oriented for the iron.
