I've played Yu-Gi-Oh since 2001 and Master Duel since day one — and I think it's currently the worst way to experience this game, and it's not even close.
In this essay I break down what Master Duel actually gets right (the free-to-play economy, the Duelist Cup / DC Cup format, Konami keeping the game alive with monthly content) before getting into the real problem: a banlist philosophy that hits consistency instead of power. Cards like Kashtira Arise-Heart, Baronne de Fleur, Tearlaments Kitkallos, and Original Sinful Spoils - Snake-Eye stay legal in Master Duel while being banned in the TCG and OCG, and floodgates like Maxx "C", Dimensional Shifter, and Fossil Dyna turn a Best of One format with no side deck into a coin flip. I also get into the 300-second turn timer, why Konami discourages creators from touching unofficial simulators like Dueling Book, and why an official Best of Three TCG simulator may never happen.
