The Israeli military said it destroyed 100 Hezbollah rocket launchers in one of the most intense bombardments of Lebanon in the last year.

IDF fighter jets hit “hundreds” of targets throughout southern Lebanon, Israel said, just days after exploding pagers and walkie-talkies killed dozens of Hezbollah members in the country.

No one appears to have died in the strikes, which were focused away from major population centres to avoid a major escalation.

The airstrikes come after Israel said it had entered a “new phase of war” which involves shifting its focus towards the north of its border, near Lebanon. “Hezbollah feels that it is being persecuted and the sequence of military actions will continue,” Israel’s defence minister said on Thursday.

The strikes also came just hours after Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s leader, gave his first statement on the wave of pager and walkie-talkie explosions which killed dozens across Lebanon.

Nasrallah accused Israel of crossing “all red lines” with the booby trap explosions. But his keenly-awaited address was disrupted by the sound of sonic booms from low-flying Israeli jets ringing across the Lebanese capital.
