Kristin King was adjusting to life with the birth of a new baby when she began experiencing symptoms that were initially thought to be normal postpartum issues. Instead, she developed peripartum cardiomyopathy, a rare form of heart failure that occurs at the end of pregnancy, or within a few months of delivery. At four months postpartum, Kristin underwent an 11-hour heart transplant surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
Kristin and her transplant cardiologist Phillip Lam, MD, spoke to CBS Evening News Plus about the risks of postpartum heart disease and if you are a new mom, listen to your body and seek help when needed.
