Phillip Sear plays a gipsy evocation by the British pianist, teacher, and composer, Mary Louisa White (1866–1935).

Born in Sheffield, White studied music at the Harrow Music School in London with John Farmer, who had founded the school in 1872. I don't know much about her career, but she invented a “Letterless Method” of musical notation for beginners. She gave concerts in London in the early 1900s and died there.

For solo piano she wrote a sizeable body of character pieces and short teaching works, including Three nocturnes, Op. 40 (1900) and Gleanings, Op. 81 (1929). She wrote in other genres, including two operettas ('The Babes in the Woods' and 'Beauty and the Beast') from 1898, and also, around that time, a patriotic 'Transvaal Symphony', marking the British campaign against the Boers.

Given that Op.40 had been achieved in 1900, I assume that the Lyrical Pieces, as Op.16, though published in 1925, were written much earlier.

He twice won the prestigious Charles Lucas Medal, in 1877 and 1878, attesting to early distinction as a student composer. He subsequently held the post of organist at St Jamess Church, Marylebone, a position that sustained his connection to Londons musical life throughout his professional career. Löhr died in Hastings, and his manuscripts are preserved at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Löhrs piano music occupies a modest but characteristic corner of the late-Victorian keyboard repertoire, oriented towards the lyric miniature and the genre piece rather than the large-scale sonata. His choral output embraces the oratorio The Queen of Sheba, Op.20 (1900) and several anthems and part-songs, complemented by a large body of solo song.
