LYRICS
The wink in a Cajuns Eye a cast iron pot full of jambalaya
The whistle of the Delta Queen sugar cane young and green
The bayou water moves so slow like the people there, there’s no rush, no
Mardi Gras Indians, Dixie Beer, sugar mills and a Fais Do Do
Mama Louisiana is calling me home
Mama Louisiana is calling me home
Highway 1 to Thibodaux, the Sunshine Bridge, spicy gumbo
Sitting in the Quarter sipping Hurricanes avoiding the flash folds and summer rains
Edwin Edwards, Huey Long Jimmy Swaggart and drinking songs
Louisiana’s children come and go but the mighty Mississippi just flows
Mama Louisiana is calling me home
Mama Louisiana is calling me home
I can’t wait to get back home and see my family
What matters now are the people in my heart
I dream of that southern road and my mama’s laughter
I been gone too long, it’s tearing me apart
Mama Louisiana is calling me home
Mama Louisiana is calling me home
Mama Louisiana is calling me home
Mama Louisiana is calling me home
Mama Louisiana is calling me home
Mama Louisiana is calling me home
Mama Louisiana is calling me home

![Rifles & Rosary Beads - Mary Gauthier [Short Film]
Directed by Neilson Hubbard and Joshua Britt (2017). Rifles & Rosary Beads is a short film about the power and beauty of turning trauma into art. Based on Mary Gauthiers new album, Rifles & Rosary Beads, the short documentary tells the story of one professional songwriters experience co-writing with Veterans and their families through the SongwritingWith:Soldiers program. Each song is a glimpse inside the heart and soul of a Veteran (or their spouse). The service members words and stories bring listeners deep into the harrowing effects of war. Written honestly from a vulnerable place, songs like these can change a wounded persons life by making beauty out of the beast. The process of co-writing them is deeply therapeutic for both the Veteran and the songwriter, but it’s not therapy. It is the making of art.

LYRICS
He’d get home at 5:30, fix his drink,
And sit down in his chair,
Pick a fight with mama,
Complain about us kids getting in his hair.
At night he’d sit alone and smoke
I’d see his frown behind his lighter’s flame
Now that same frown’s in my mirror
I got my daddy’s blood inside my veins
Fish swim birds fly
Daddies yell mamas cry
Old men sit and think
I drink
Chicken TV dinner 6 minutes on defrost, 3 on high
A beer to wash it down with
Then another, a little whiskey on the side it’s not so bad alone here
Don’t bother me that every night’s the same
I don’t need another lover hanging round, trying to make me change
Fish swim birds fly
Lovers leave by and by
Old men sit and think
I drink
I know what I am
But I don’t give a damn
Fish swim birds fly
Daddies yell mama’s cry
Old men sit and think

LYRICS
A warm wind blows across my windowsill tonight
Like a ghost, like a ghost, soft and low
In this other- worldly light I dream of Rose
Common time never ceases, never yields
It comes and it goes now I find
I lost the pavement ‘neath my wheels when I lost Rose
Should anybody wonder where I’m bound, I don’t know
I come and I go wreckage looks the same from town to town
I suppose it wasn’t meant to be this way for Rose
Soldier on what’s left might not be what I planned
But what I chose what I chose
And the sun, up and slipped right thru my hands
when I lost Rose
Should anybody wonder where I’m bound
I don’t’ know, I come, and I go
Wreckage looks the same from town to town
I suppose it wasn’t meant to be this way for Rose Mary Gauthier - For Rose [Audio]](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/9pZDpIh0rBo/mqdefault.jpg)

LYRICS
Youre crying cause Im not crying
Youre crying while I sit here looking strong
Youre sad cause I dont feel the pain youre feeling
But my turns coming after youre gone
Youre angry for the good years you wasted
Youre angry cause you watched me turn to stone
But soon the walls Ive built will start to crumble
My turns coming after youre gone
After youre gone Im gonna miss you
After youre gone Ill call your name
As soon as I cant Ill want to kiss you
Thats when Ill realize well never kiss again
After youre gone Ill fall to pieces
After youre gone its me Ill blame
Ill think of all kindness youve shown me
And Ill hate myself, cause I never change
And Ill be crying when you stop crying
Crying, when you sit there looking strong
Ill be sad cause you wont feel the pain Im feeling

LYRICS
I hated high school, I prayed it would end
The jocks and their girls, it was their world, I didnt fit in
Mama said, Baby, its the best school that money can buy,
Hold your head up, be strong, cmon Mary, try.
I stole mamas car on a Sunday and left home for good
Moved in with my friends in the city, in a bad neighborhood
Charles was a dancer, he loved the ballet
And Kimmy sold pot and read Kerouac and Hemingway
Drag Queens in Limousines nuns in blue jeans
Dreamers with big dreams all took me in
Charly and I flipped burgers to cover the rent
And Bourbons at Happy hour for .35 cents
One day before work we got drunk and danced in the rain
They fired us both, said, Dont y’all come back here again.
CHORUS
My daddy went to college, and he worked for the state
He never quit nothing he wanted me to graduate
My brother and sister both play in the marching band
They tell me they miss me, but I know they dont understand.
Sometimes you got do, what you gotta do
And pray that the people you love, will catch up with you.
Yea drag queens in limousines nuns in blue jeans
Dreamers with big dreams poets and AWOL marines
Actors and bar fly’s writers with dark eyes
Drunks that philosophize these are my friends Mary Gauthier - Drag Queens In Limousines (Live at Blue Rock) [Audio]](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Cb7tzuJkMnM/mqdefault.jpg)

LYRICS
When I was a kid I was a hard headed pig tailed tomboy I made mama crazy cause I wouldn’t wear dresses and bows
I played with boys and I liked tackle football
I shot snakes with my brother down at the fishing hole
I’d fantasize I was Evil Kineval
I built ramps jumped garbage cans broke my wrist bone
Picked blackberries in the summer reaching right thru snake spit
Mama said girl slow down you’re accident prone
The best part of those days is I was carefree
Nobody telling me to act more like a girl
When you’re 10 years old it’s cute to be a tomboy
But in a couple of years you gotta deal with the ways of the world
In the summer I’d cut grass to make a few bucks
I worked for Mr. Jones for years he called me son
I’d take his money and I’d say thank you kindly
He thought I was a boy I didn’t tell him I wasn’t one
Then came the time there was no getting out of it
They made me wear a dress to a wedding I was in
My brother laughed at my dress and I punched his lights out
The day was ruined and mama said never again
I saved up fifty dollars and bought a dirt bike
It lasted three days till mama took a heart attack
I never shoulda popped that wheelie with mama watching
I scared her half to death, she made me bring the damn thing back Mary Gauthier - Ways Of The World [Audio]](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/D-lbV2JjD_o/mqdefault.jpg)

LYRICS
We lie here and we lie here awaiting the return
Of the passion that has left us with the patience we’ve learned
Sinking in the ashes of the red night’s final swing
The sun fades the color of everything
We lie here and we lie here without much to say
In our silent sanctuary we call it a day
Seasons change quietly winter whispers spring
The sun fades the color of everything.
Me and you, we wait it out it might be ‘round the bend
Every time we think it’s gone it comes back again
We hold on to each other but to our faith we cling
The sun fades the color of everything
We lie here and we lie here waiting for a sign
You follow yours and I follow mine
Sleeping with our backs turned floating off on polished wings
The sun fades the color of everything
Me and you, we wait it out it might be ‘round the bend
Every time we think it’s gone it comes back again
We hold on to each other but to our faith we cling

LYRICS
Mama said she don’t give a damn what those people say
Cane smoke can’t be good for you day after day
Every year at harvest time when the black smoke filled the sky
She’d pick me up and take me home and make me stay inside
From Thibodaux to Raceland there’s fire in the fields
All the way up the bayou from Lafourche to Iberville
Dirty air, dirty laundry, dirty money, dirty rain
A dirty dark at daybreak burning the sugar cane
Christmas on the bayou, midnight come and gone
Driving past the sugar mill and all the lights are on
The parking lot is full of trucks I can see the furnace glow
Everybody’s working overtime, it’s a good job, even though
From Thibodaux to Raceland there’s fire in the fields
All the way up the bayou from Lafourche to Iberville
Dirty air, dirty laundry, dirty money, dirty rain
A dirty dark at daybreak burning the sugar cane
First came the sugar cane, then came Thibodaux
Cane sugar built this town, cane sugar paved these roads
They burn the leaves to harvest cash, money for the company
Money makes the world go round, money, money, money
From Thibodaux to Raceland there’s fire in the fields
All the way up the bayou from Lafourche to Iberville
Dirty air, dirty laundry, dirty money, dirty rain
A dirty dark at daybreak burning, burning
The soot and ash are falling like a dark and deadly snow
The air is full of poison to the Gulf of Mexico
Dirty air, dirty laundry dirty money dirty rain
A dirty deal with the devil, burning the sugar cane Mary Gauthier - Sugar Cane [Audio]](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/EErWvLlYY7Q/mqdefault.jpg)
