Mary Blair was one of the most prominent artists to ever work in animation. A graduate of the prestigious Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, which eventually became part of CalArts, she is most known for her visual development work during the silver age of Walt Disney Animation on productions like Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. Her distinctive art style is immediately recognisable and has influenced countless artists working in the industry today. As well as her work at Walt Disney Animation she was also involved with the Imagineers helping them visualize the iconic Disneyland ride It’s a Small World, which started as part of an exhibition for the 1964 New York World Fair. Her work was also featured in countless children's books, advertising campaigns and set designs. She was inducted into the group of Disney Legends in 1991. She is the first female recipient of our Lifetime Achievement award, which is so fitting as Blair was one of the few women to rise to a leadership role in animation during a time when this wasn’t this norm, trailblazing a path for future generations of female artists.
To present Mary Blair's lifetime achievement award is Brittany Lee. Blair's niece Maggie Richardson accepted on her behalf.
The Concept Art Association's 2022 Concept Art Awards ceremony, Presented by LightBox Expo - hosted by Krystina Arielle (Star Wars: The High Republic) and Imani Hakim (Mythic Quest). The event is the first of its kind to recognize and bring increased awareness of the role of concept artists throughout the world of movies, television, animation, and games. The annual Concept Art Awards Show showcases and recognizes these behind-the-scenes individuals working in entertainment concept art.
