This is the story of a little girl whose idea of 'playing' brought tragedy and outrage to a tight community in northern England, in the summer of 1968.
Although her background was an impoverished one, and she herself also claimed an abusive one; the professionals have never been able to truly fathom what could drive a 10 year to commit such horrible crimes.
Mary later acknowledges that 'something was not right' with her, but claims to be totally normal now. Her subsequent release from incarceration seems to prove that. Today she is a mother and grandmother, and lives in anonymity.
