MARLIN DARRAH - Brief Biography
Marlin Darrah is an American business entrepreneur, award-winning film producer and director, geography lecturer and cinematographer. He's also a musician and screenplay writer. He's been called "The World's Most Traveled Filmmaker" by a producer at National Geographic.
Since 1976, Darrah has been executive director of various film production businesses, such as the company International Film & Video, in Oregon and California. He's directed and produced more than 100 theatrical dramatic movies, international documentaries and travel films, in 150 countries on all seven continents, spending almost 15 years in total overseas. For nearly 3 years of that time, Darrah worked-lived in various European countries, i.e. France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Slovakia and the U.K.
For more than 40 years, he's negotiated a wide variety of business contracts with various corporations, other film producers, directors and writers, as well as with actors and film production crews in dozens of countries.
His feature films and documentaries have won more than 200 "Best Director," "Best Film" and other awards and nominations at 130 film festivals, from Paris to Berlin, and from New York to Mexico City and Istanbul.
Some of his movies and documentaries include An Egypt Affair (2023), Amazon Queen (2021), Monsoon Lover (2003), Around the World with Marlin Darrah (12-part
TV series, 2012), Dali's Greatest Secret (2014), Relic Kingdoms (2016), Marco Polo & The Great Silk Road (2010), Cuba Today (2011), Secrets and Mysteries of Columbus (2017), Jesus in Egypt (2005), In the Shadow of Bin Laden (2004), and Lost Tribes of New Guinea (2001). Darrah produced Nike's first film, Running Peace (1977).
In 2014, in recognition for his international cultural and geographical documentaries, Darrah was honored with a Knighthood in the Royal House of Portugal, bestowed by Portugal's King-in-Waiting, Dom Duarte Pio, in Lisbon.
Darrah is also an accomplished public speaker. He's presented more than 700 international geography lectures and films to audiences throughout the United States,
at venues in 20 states, ranging from Boston's Harvard Hall, to the Geographical Society of Philadelphia and at various American colleges and cultural art theaters and civic auditoriums. Profits from most of Darrah's lecture-film presentations have gone to benefit dozens of charitable projects operated by organizations such as Rotary Int'l, Kiwanis Int'l, Lions Clubs Int'l and the National Center for Human and Civil Rights, in Atlanta.
Darrah has produced documentaries that have included interviews with Nobel Peace Prize winners such as South Africa's Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela; and in the 1980's and '90s with various presidents and leaders as Indira Gandhi, Fidel Ramos, Mikhail Gorbachev and Fidel Castro.
From 1989-2008, Darrah was Director of Film Production for the renown international study-abroad organization, The Institute for Shipboard Education, at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Virginia. During that time Darrah produced more than 50 documentary and educational films, showcasing diverse learning opportunities in dozens of countries around the world.
Darrah's movies and documentaries have been broadcast or streamed on dozens of networks, channels and platforms, ranging from Netflix, to AppleTV, Amazon Prime, SpectrumTV, Roku and TubiTV. His programs and international motion shots have aired on CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN and PBS. Darrah's movies and documentaries have been viewed by tens of millions of people around the world, and have enjoyed sales of broadcast rights of more than $10 million. National Geographic represents Darrah and the sale of his library of thousands of int'l motion shots.
From 1980-2020, Darrah produced tourism promotional films for various airlines, corporations and tourism bureaus in two dozen countries, from Brazil to Indonesia and from Turkey to Egypt.
From 2010-2020, Darrah presented piano performances in various civic auditoriums and theaters throughout the United States.
Darrah has a B.A. in Cinema Studies from the University of Oregon (1978). His college coursework also included anthropology, music and television direction. He speaks basic Spanish and basic German.
Darrah's uncle, Floyd Paseman, had a 35-year career in the Central Intelligence Agency, serving as bureau chief in Berlin, Athens, Rangoon, Singapore, etc. Darrah’s father, Leslie C. Darrah was a distinguished U.S. Naval officer in the Pacific during WWII.
Darrah was born in 1956 in Eugene, Oregon, to parents of mixed German and Scots-Irish heritage. He's married to Lin Zuo (2010-present) and has a daughter, Maya McDarragh. Darrah has a brother, Michael Darrah, living in Eugene, Oregon. Darrah and his wife live in Pasadena, California.
