Mark Zuckerberg’s recent letter to Rep. Jim Jordan about Meta’s content-moderation policies is yet another datapoint exposing the censorship industrial complex. He revealed similar information in an interview with Joe Rogan two years ago, so this didn’t come as a surprise. However, it further proves that the federal government has pressured social media platforms to censor the constitutionally-protected speech of American citizens, simply because it contradicted the preferred narratives of big business, the military, and the government in general. Recent crackdowns on ‘hate speech’ in the UK and the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov in France further underscore the accelerating threat to free speech, and it’s becoming increasingly clear that Americans face the same threats, albeit in a subtler form. Our First Amendment may be the strongest protection for freedom ever implemented in human history, but it still doesn’t make us immune to this problem altogether. Freedom-loving people guarantee our rights, not words on a piece of paper.
