Mark Ruffalo is taking on one of the most powerful billionaire families in America, and now he’s fighting back against accusations that his criticism is antisemitic.
The controversy began after Ruffalo shared a clip discussing Oracle’s support for Israel. In the footage discussed in this episode, former Oracle CEO Safra Catz describes the company’s public support for Israel and refers to technology Oracle made available following October 7, while saying there were aspects she could not discuss publicly.
Ruffalo connected those concerns to billionaire Larry Ellison and his son David Ellison, whose influence now stretches across both technology and media. David Ellison’s Skydance acquired Paramount and CBS News, and the family is now pursuing the massive Warner Bros. deal discussed in the episode.
Ruffalo argues that the deal threatens thousands of entertainment industry jobs, competition, consumer choice and editorial independence. But much of the subsequent coverage instead centered on accusations that Ruffalo’s criticism was antisemitic.
Ruffalo responded directly, calling that accusation “appalling and fundamentally dishonest” and arguing that criticizing the Israeli government, military technology contracts or individual executives is not the same thing as criticizing Jewish people. He also warned that the proposed $111 billion deal would put CNN, HBO and Warner Bros. under the control of one family.
We break down what Ruffalo actually said, Oracle’s role in the controversy, the Ellison family’s expanding media empire, the accusations against him, and the larger issue getting lost in the fight: Should one billionaire family have this much control over American media?
