While experimenting with the Famicom hardware, I discovered you can make Mario walk backwards if you press left and right simultaneously. Normally this is impossible because of a fulcrum in the directional pad, but I had connected a second controller via the expansion port in the front.
A lot of games don't account for being able to press left + right, so this will make weird things happen sometimes. In this game, it makes mario walk backwards. He'll move to the right slowly while facing left, but no acceleration is allowed. Your speed will stay constant to whatever you had before you started doing this.
You can try this out in some emulators like Nestopia which have an option to permit simultaneous left and right.
