Here's an excellent Super Mario World ROM hack, done by Gamma V, that I recommend even to beginners who haven't played much Mario or aren't very good at it.
The difficulty ramps up properly and is appropriately forgiving across the first few worlds, feeling like a true Nintendo game while remaining very playable and full of secrets. The graphics and art style work well without clashing, and it's incredibly colorful, using some neat special effects in certain stages, as well as memorable music from all sorts of games you might recognize! The game contains 86 exits and an extensive amount of secret levels and shortcuts.
The bosses are just a tiny bit wonky in some cases, but it is a pleasant experience all around, and something I would buy a reproduction cartridge of to play it on a genuine Super NES.
