This is a capture of me playing through the 150cc Flower Cup in Mario Kart World for the Switch 2. I'm using my favorite character, Luigi, and earning a 3-star rating.

Well, here’s the new Mario Kart game. Since the Switch only received an upgraded port of the Wii U’s Mario Kart (which I played to death), I didn’t bother with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, even though it received a ton of new tracks.

So Mario Kart World is my first new Mario Kart game in 11 years. This is longest period I have ever gone without getting a new Mario Kart. I did manage to play one of the Mario Kart Arcade GP games in the past few years though.

Mario Kart World is a shocking change for me. Aside from the new “open world” concept, the game feels like it is trying to be Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater with the constant rail grinding, wall riding, and tricks. Nintendo may have overcomplicated the racing, but some people seem to really like the insane shortcuts that you can pull off with these maneuvers. I thought that Mario Kart Wii’s time trial world records were insane, but Mario Kart World puts those to shame.

Even though motorcycles are once again available, there’s no longer inside drifting, which is disappointing. The controls also feel quite floaty, especially in midair and on water.

When it comes to the Grand Prix though, the game is not all that difficult. You can get a 3-star rating just by finishing in first place in each race, regardless of whether you fall off the track. This is far less frustrating than Mario Kart Wii’s requirements.

The courses themselves are quite good overall, but I hate the new connecting sections between tracks, and I think a lot of other people do too. Whoever came up with that idea needs to be demoted or fired.

I’m not an expert at this game, but I tried to do some decent racing and include a fair amount of tricks and whatnot.

In this video I completed the Flower Cup in the 150cc class.

Recorded with the Elgato Game Capture HD60 and the Switch 2's HDMI cable at native 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second. I'm using a Joy-Con 2 Wheel.
