As she was drifting to take the shortcut on Rainbow Road, Bowser had cleverly thrown a banana peel right at the edge of the track where she was then spun off the track, missing the track below. As unexpected as this was, Lakitu was surprised and couldn't pick up and save Rosalina in time, and she is now lost in space, never to be seen again.
Bowser has been charged with 1st degree murder, and was sent to death row to die within the next couple weeks.
