Nintendo has a long history of protecting their iconic mascot, which means some truly bizarre and fascinating Mario games never saw the light of day. In this video, we dive into three cancelled projects that Nintendo ultimately refused to release to the public. First up is Boo's Haunt for the Nintendo DS, a game where you played as a ghost fresh out of Haunt University. It featured a highly stylized art direction and a unique enemy possession mechanic that actually pre-dates Super Mario Odyssey.

We also look at a surprisingly smooth PC port of Super Mario Bros. 3 created by an outside group called Ideas from the Deep. While Nintendo rejected the pitch to keep Mario strictly on their own hardware, the developers took their impressive side-scrolling tech and eventually founded id Software, where they went on to create DOOM. Finally, we discuss Super Mario Spikers for the Wii, a gritty and chaotic mix of volleyball and wrestling. Despite looking incredible, it was ultimately scrapped because Nintendo felt the brutal beatdown animations were far too violent for Mario's wholesome family image. Subscribe if you think they should have made these games a reality.
