I haven't played a new Mario fan game in quite a while now, so here's one that's been requested a long time ago, but I never got down to doing :"The Minus Worlds" by Crist1919. This game is AWESOME, and I say that wholeheartedly because anybody playing it, even the most nitpicking players, would have a hard time finding anything wrong with it : smooth controls, awesome soundtracks, no glitches, no impossibly difficult or annoying parts and even the fuckin' soundtracks are at the right level ! DAMN ! Doesn't that kick ass ?! Funily enough, it seems to get it right with all of the common issues I've addressed in other fan games so far, so I must wonder if the creator took into account some of my own pointers when tweaking this game. I got my hands on the game a couple of months ago, when it was still in its beta stage, so it only had 2 worlds back then. I believe more have been added since then, which is great, because the game is so addicting and fun, I was actually sad it ended. Normally some games are so hard or so bad (or both !) that I can't wait to get them over with, but not this one, which is a big deal because I'm a tough customer to please ! I have to say there is something to fix, although it's more of a free-win than a problem : level 2 takes place underground, and just like in Super Mario Bros on Nintendo, you can jump up on the ceiling through an opening and take a shortcut. The problem here is that there's no way back to the level : once you hop up there, there's no other opening to drop back into the level later on, so you can just skip the whole level and go straight to the end. In a really hard and annoying game, being able to take a shortcut through the whole level would've been a perfect revenge to take on the game for pissing you off, but here it's unnecessary and it's a waste of a very long and pretty challenging level into which a lot of effort clearly went. You don't feel the need to vent any anger, because the game is awesome, so there should be a wall or a barrier that either prevents you from going up there in the first place, or another opening later on which forces you back down so you can beat the level the traditional way. Other than that, there were no other flaws I could find, so Crist1919 you rule ! Gold medal from DGV for this title ! I don't know how you did it and I don't know what it is, but you got it ! Keep it up and make sure you provide me with the remaining 6 worlds (or even more if you can do it), because I'm sure they'll be just as good and I want to share your work with the world and spread the word about your name, because you deserve it ! Consider this my way of saying thanks for giving us something great to play ! Danny out !

Heres another letter world by Mariovariable: World O. After so many letter worlds, I wasnt expecting much out of this one and to be fair, it doesnt have anything spectacular. The biggest improvement here is the addition of a continue feature that puts you back at the beginning of the last level you died on, rather than having to do the whole world over. It also works if you quit the game, so this one finally got it right - if only more games had this. I sure hope we get to see more doing this. A checkpoint in level 2 also has a 1-UP mushroom close to it, which enables you to collect it every time you die so you dont lose any lives. Most of the soundtracks are also at the proper volume, so Im inclined to think the creator took into account some of my rants when making this one, which is nice and shows some effort put into the game. With that being said, the game overall is OK, but its pretty standard overall : no exciting parts or stuff that we havent seen before. I mean yeah, there is a cleverly designed level 3 which goes dark after a while and you have to hit certain blocks to restore the brightness, but thats just a change in appearance and not in the way the level actually plays, as its still very linear and unimpressive. This lack of interest on my side could also be because Ive been playing only Mario games for the past 7 videos, so naturally I got increasingly bored and harder to impress - what more could you do that already hasnt been done ? Good game, still.")

SMB Crossover also includes The Lost Levels, also known as SMB 2 on the Famicom. This is the official sequel to the original NES game, but wasnt released outside Japan until much later as The Lost Levels...Im sure you know all about that by now. Given that this is the same game as last time, just with different levels, theres nothing more I can say that I havent already said last time - regardless of the level set, SMB Crossover is a great game, definitely worth checking out. This adaptation also allows you to play the 4 letter worlds which come after the 8 regular ones and the extra world 9. Not many people know about these, since to get to them in the original Famicom game, youd have to beat the entire game 8 times ! Obviously nobodys going to have the patience to do that, so the SMB Crossover port solves that issue by inserting the letter worlds immediately after the 9 regular ones, so the mysterys finally solved : we can now play the original letter worlds in SMB 2.....not to be confused with any of the fan-made letter worlds in Mario Forever ! Heres another game in the Softendo family: New Super Mario Forever. As you may have guessed from the title, its similar to New Super Mario Bros on the Wii, though I wouldnt call it a rip-off since it doesnt actually copy anything directly from the Wii game - it borrows the concept, enemies and powerups and reuses them in its own way to create something new. The overall concept is the same as Super Mario Bros 3 on the NES: same map format with 8 different worlds and 7 sons of Bowser you have to defeat, same enemies and even some levels look the same, so youll feel at home with this one. Graphically speaking, the game is decent, considering what it is, though the animations of Mario walking and jumping look a bit off and I noticed a lot of people making fun of this in the comments. Gameplay-wise, one thing I can say I dont like is how the screen takes too long to pan when you jump to the top - it freezes for about 1 second before it finally reorients. This could cost you a hit if you jump right into an enemy that you cant see - it should adjust instantly to keep Mario in the middle of the screen at all time. The music and sounds are very good as well: you get musical variety and the quality of the soundtracks is awesome. One thing they decided to change and I dont really appreciate is the sounds Mario makes when jumping (stuff like Ah ! Yeah ! HoUh !). Since its a platform game where you jump a lot, they tend to get irritating after a while and you cant turn them off - you have to turn off all other sound effects too. I would have much preferred the traditional jump sound effects of all the other games, or at least have an option to toggle the voice on and off, independent of the sound effects. Another thing that ruins what would otherwise be a great Mario fan game is the overwhelming amount of spelling and grammar errors - thought NES games were bad at this when they got ported from their japanese versions ? Well, look again: the word order is incorrect and many words are misspelled, making the messages incoherent and even confusing to read, especially in the early levels where youre given instructions on how to perform certain moves - I actually had to read a message twice before figuring out how to do the wall jump. Im aware the maker of the game is not a native English speaker, but couldnt he at least get someone to proof-read the game before releasing it to the public ? I kinda smell Google Translate here ! To be perfectly fair its not too much of a problem as far as playability is concerned, because its the gameplay that counts in Mario games and not so much the dialogues. If it were an RPG like Castlevania where you had to rely on clues and dialogues to progress, then yes, it would be a big issue indeed, but in an action-oriented game like this, we can let it slide. Other than that, theres no need to go into great detail about the game since its self explanatory - if you dont know how to play a Mario game then you shouldnt call yourself a gamer ! Aside from the F it gets in grammar, the game gets an overall A from Daniels Game Vault. Softendo pretty much did everything they could to recreate a Wii game on the PC, which is no easy task considering how complex it is, so for that I can only applaud them ! Well done !")

After facing a lot of issues with the copyrighted soundtracks in my original video of World 9 (which even caused the vid to get blocked twice), I decided that the most sensible thing to do is to just make a fresh video and start clean, so I did just that. I already played World 9 before (check the link above and also my videos), but even so, it still took quite a bit of time to actually complete it, mainly because there are no continues or 1-UPs. Still, with practice and patience, I overcame that shortcoming and I eventually made it. Enjoy !")

Another basic fan world - functional but not terribly impressive. It could also be because Ive been playing a lot of them lately, so its getting harder and harder to find something worthy of praise...I think DGV will go on a short vacation, since I feel Ive been neglecting my real life a bit lately and I dedicated too much time to the show while there are some other pressing matters at hand (such as my college degree).
