The first time playing "The Minus Worlds" by Crist1919 I was absolutely delighted by the overall quality of his work: awesome selection of soundtracks, optimal difficulty and challenging levels that were also fun as all hell to play. Being that it was still in an early stage, the original game only had 2 worlds, so when the creator personally informed me that he released version 1.5 with 2 more worlds, I just had to play it ! Probably the biggest most important addition is the continue feature that lets you retry from the beginning of the level you died on, rather than having to go back to the first level of the world whenever you run out of lives. After so many fan games that lacked this essential feature, this one finally got it right, and it was absolutely necessary and justified to have continues here, because the later levels are very long and kinda difficult, so there's no way one would have the patience and energy to play them again after making it far into the game, so that alone is enough to make you worship this guy. This is as close to perfection as a fan game can get, however one thing I can say I don't like is that the continue feature doesn't start you at the latest checkpoint - it always puts you back at the beginning of the level, which is not that bad, but still a waste of time and stamina to make it back, though I guess this would be pushing it. Another issue related to this one is that some levels have sub-areas which are still considered part of the main level, so when you die in the sub-area (e.g. the boss battle), you go back to the latest checkpoint you set, which is always pretty far back and requires you to risk a life going through the second half of the level again before making it back. If you lose your last life it's even worse, because the continue feature puts you all the way back at the beginning of the level - not the sub-area or checkpoint. There are a couple of ways to fix this: either make the continue option put you back at the checkpoint, or treat these sub-areas as individual levels so the continue option starts you off there, just as if it were a regular level. It might sound like making the game too easy that way, but the challenge level is up there, so it would be rewarding to cut you some slack. The beauty of any game, regardless of the genre, is playing it in its entirety, not being stuck on the same level for hours on end ! That doesn't mean it happens here, although I can't deny that there were some parts that kicked my a$$ a bit - you gotta have some of those too, otherwise it would be too easy, which is not good either. It's all about balance, and Crist managed to get it right for the most part. With that being said, this game continues to be the best Mario Forever fan game I've played as of making this video, so you get a gold medal once again Crist. You're the best ! Keep it up like this, and make sure you release the rest of the worlds and possibly even more if you can, since they're so well done and so enjoyable to play that you don't want to stop. Danny out !

After the disappointment that was World Z, I was hoping Id find something better to play...and I did : this is World DB by the guy whose name is too long to actually spell, thats why I call him Number Guy :)) Anyway, Number Guy here, along with Chomikmg3, managed to deliver a great little fan game ! You can tell he put some effort into it, since it has balanced difficulty, plenty of powerups and is visually appealing overall. The only thing that needs improving, and I cant believe Im asking for this, is the difficulty of the last boss, as hes a bit too easy. The game is enjoyable overall, so you dont really fell the need for an equally easy boss to compensate. There are also continue mushrooms near most of the checkpoints, or at least other ways of recovering lost lives, like taking out 7 enemies in a row with a turtle shell, or the classic way of collecting 100 coins, which are also abundant. Other than Bowser which is too easy to defeat, I cant really find anything bad to say about this one ! Id call it short but sweet. Not bad - give it a shot ! Approved by the DGV council.")

Time to tackle World N by Mariovariable. It took me about as much time to beat as World M, so I can really decide whether its actually harder or not. The only thing thats different is that this is a much slower paced world than the last one, meaning you wont be running for cover in short time intervals or something like that, but instead youll be swimming....aaaaand swimming some more, because this is a water-themed world. With the exception of the castle, every level has some water in it, even if you cant actually swim in it. Same problems I mentioned so far apply here as well : the audio needs normalizing and some continues would be desirable as well, especially since the first 2 levels are really boring and you shouldnt have to do them again every time you lose all of your lives. So : is it easier ? Is it harder ? Watch, and be the judge :D")

I was given a new release of Mario Forever 2014 to have a look at, so I started with the new stuff that has been added. Out of convenience, I started playing the levels in the order in which they appear on the save-screen (skipping the ones Ive already done), so the first one up was Volcano Level by OnHunTinG. Judging by the name alone, it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that its similar to level 3 of World 9 by my old friend Syzxchulun. Its a standalone level for now, so after you complete it you simply go back to the main menu, but in the future Im expecting it to be included in a bigger world, since its not like OnHunTinG to make one-off levels. The level itself is OK, so OnHunTinG did his job on his part, but 2233 who made the main game and bundled all the fan worlds with it, still has to work out the key-mapping problem, because just like in the previous version, no matter which keys you set in the main menu, when you quit the game or start a new one, it just uses the default keys, which are SHIFT for jumping and CTRL for running. I said this before last time, but this is a really uncomfortable choice of keys, because theyre one above each other, which means I have to use my pinky finger to hold down CTRL, while pressing SHIFT with my ring finger, which results in sore-ass fingernails after a long session of playing. I wouldve much preferred the default keys to be X and Z like in all other fan games so far, and which is also what I set them to, regardless of the game I play. Other than that (and the fact that the audio is not normalised, but I wont even bother ranting about that since it seems to be so hard to fix), theres not much else I can say for now - its only the first level I play, so I cant give a final verdict regarding the overall game. Still, give Volcano Level a try, its OK even on its own.")

Lets have a look at the other levels bundled with this new version of MF 2015. The first two I played were World 10 Advanced and World D. As the name suggests, the first one is an edit of World 10 by Syzxchulun and since it got way too difficult way too fast, I eventually gave up on it, especially since Ive already played World 10 before and wasnt really in the mood to do it again. The original was already hard enough, so I cant imagine what this was gonna be like after I couldnt even get past the first level. The second custom world, World D, is a prototype of sorts...its playable, but by no means amazing or original. The second level is the same as the fist one, just with the falling ceiling of doom in place and the boss battle is impossible to finish due to Bowser taking so many hits that its impossible to beat him within the time limit - either that, or theres a glitch that makes him invincible. His energy bar doesnt appear either, so its impossible to tell whether youre actually hurting him or not. Once again, mediocre is the word of the day here, just like with the main game, so theres really not much to say...Danny out.")

This is World Z by GmodGaming. What can I say ? Basic fan world with some serious issues, both in terms of graphics and gameplay. It wouldnt be so bad if some didnt cost lives, but they do, like a bug in level 3 that causes you to get stuck outside the screen and die if you go off the left side (which shouldnt be possible in the first place !). Then theres a checkpoint inside the castle thats right over a hole, so you have to move right immediately after respawning or else you drop straight in the said hole. Bowser is also very difficult, borderline impossible, due to the multitude of hammers he throws and the inability to jump on his head when hes in mid air. Despite trying really hard, I couldnt finish it for this reason. I couldve tried over and over, since amazingly there IS a continue feature that puts you back at the castle level, but I was sure I wouldnt do any better, so I gave up. Keep in mind that the final verdict I give a game is not strictly dependent on whether I beat it or not: theres games that are nearly impossible to beat, but are still enjoyable to play, while others are unsatisfactory despite finishing them with relative ease. This one unfortunately lies somewhere in between those 2 categories, meaning its both hard AND unappealing at the same time. Aside from the aforementioned functionality problems, the graphics department is pretty unimpressive too, starting with the title screen itself and ending with what I like to call graphics freak-outs in level 3 (that even caused me to die once for some reason). If I were to be a real b!tch, Id also point out how the first 2 levels reuse the themes from World 11 and The Minus Worlds respectively, which denotes a lack of originality. Im just being objective here ! Feel free to prove me otherwise, but this is a pretty low quality game ! I sure hope some improvements will be made soon, because for now, thats how it stands Im afraid ! You be the judge. Danny out.")

Heres another minus world by my good old friend Crist1919. Like all the others, its nicely done: great soundtracks, great visuals, great level design, but theres one thing that kills the whole experience: the lag ! I dont know if happens only on my PC, but the entire game lags on EVERY-SINGLE-LEVEL ! Aside from bringing the fun factor level down pretty significantly, it can also cost lives in certain situations: in level 2 for example, which is an underwater maze, the timer seems to count down at normal speed while the game itself runs at about half that, so its going to run out at least once, since its physically impossible to move that fast - pretty unacceptable, wouldnt you say ? Like in other MF games, the lag also allows you to jump much higher than normal, which can be useful or detrimental depending on the level. In the castle for example, theres a spiked ceiling, so jumping high is the complete opposite of what you need. Jumping off screen too much can also trigger a stability bug, where upon coming back down, Mario falls straight through the ground and dies, so thats another thing that can take away a life and which actually happened to me about 3 times in the video ! Not a bad world in itself, but the performance needs tweaking in order to get the full, fast paced experience the creator had in mind. Danny out !")
