In 1999, after the Columbine High School shooting, Marilyn Manson became one of America’s biggest scapegoats.
Early media reports wrongly linked the shooters to Manson’s music. Suddenly, instead of discussing the tragedy itself, politicians and television commentators were asking whether a shock-rock musician was somehow responsible.
Manson cancelled the remaining dates of his tour out of respect for the victims. Then he fought back—not with another controversial stunt, but with one of the most memorable answers of his career.
When Michael Moore asked him what he would say to the students at Columbine, Manson said: “I wouldn’t say a single word to them. I would listen to what they have to say, and that’s what no one did.”
For many people, it was the first time they saw past the makeup and the public persona.
But as his career continued, the line between the Marilyn Manson character and Brian Warner became much harder to separate. The full video gets into that story.
