I am Bek (they/them) and I read The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald and the retelling, The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo, back-to-back and these were my thoughts. This is not totally spoiler-free because I do talk about a lot of details, though I dont talk about the big event at the end of either book.
In here, I discuss themes in The Great Gatsby (primarily themes of the American Dream and critique of the American Dream), racism and antisemetism in the book, and some thoughts on the characters of Nick and Gatsby (talking at length about why I think reading Nick as gay just makes sense). Then I discuss The Chosen and the Beautiful as how it responds to the themes and writing of the original text and some of the queer representation and insight on relationships (though I think its worth noting that what I say in here about particular identities is specific to the characters. I dont want my words to be taken as a commentary on any sexuality its just the situation in this particular book with these characters).
