I recently discovered another forgotten treasure: a collection of 12 delightful organ voluntaries by the overlooked English composer *Arthur Carnall (1852–1904).* Like so many late Victorian composers, his music gradually disappeared from view after being considered old-fashioned by the musical establishment. I think that is a real shame, because these pieces are full of charm, craftsmanship and musicality.
In this video I play one of the shortest works from the collection, A *March in A-flat Major.* It may be a miniature, but don’t let its size fool you. It is a wonderfully characterful piece and, despite sounding effortless, it is surprisingly tricky to play well.
I purchased this rare book, had it shipped from the United Kingdom to my Little Studio on the Roof, carefully digitized it and prepared it as a clean PDF so others can enjoy it too.
I genuinely like making this kind of forgotten music available, and whenever possible I prefer to rely on voluntary donations to help cover the costs of acquiring and preserving these rare publications. Unfortunately, reality has shown that this model isn’t sustainable. Out of the last 1,000 downloads, only five people chose to make a donation. To those five people: thank you so much.
