...or that I have “one of those brains” that is wired to understand synthesis…
But that couldn’t be further from the truth.
When I first got started with modular synthesis, I was SUPER excited & curious, but also extremely intimidated. I had zero experience working with technology, no music production skills, & I knew nothing about electronics in general.
I DID know I was fascinated by the sounds of these instruments. I knew I wanted to be able to dream up my own soundscapes and worlds…
But truthfully?
I was convinced I wasn’t smart enough to do it.
I remember feeling too nervous to ask questions, for fear that my questions would sound “stupid”. Instead, I tried to figure everything out on my own, which wasn’t easy.
I kept getting stuck in a cycle of trying to learn, giving up, trying to learn, getting stuck—thankfully I’m stubborn, & kept at it, & now I get to work with these instruments every single day.
THIS is why I created my online class “Learning Sound & Synthesis.” The fact that this topic did *not* come easily to me is why I love teaching it—helping others who are curious, creative, & maybe a bit intimidated realize that they too are 1000% capable of making music with synths, is endlessly rewarding to me.
Past LSS students have gone from:
🎛️ never touching a synth before to building a custom modular synth & creating music with confidence
🎛️ struggling with self doubt & stage fright (I can relate!) to doing their first live performances—& doing them beautifully
🎛️ feeling like they make the same patch over & over to creating (& finishing!) entire albums they are super proud of,
…& so much more.
If you’re feeling intimidated like I used to, just know that you are capable. ❤️
The next round of LSS opens in February.
