This is raw footage from the 1970 Manson Family trial. Charles Manson, the accused, arrived at the trial on Friday wearing jail denims and sporting a cross slashed into his forehead, which his defense attorney claimed he had cut himself with a razor blade. Seated alongside him were the other defendants: Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Leslie Van Houten. The prosecutor claimed that the state's star witness, Linda Kasabian, would testify on Monday that Manson's followers, including the three women defendants, were "slavishly obedient" to him and committed the murders at his command. The prosecutor described Manson as a "megalomaniac" with "total domination" over his followers, who had an "insatiable thirst for power" coupled with a desire for violent death. However, a defense attorney objected to the state's interjection of motive in its opening statement, and the judge ordered prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi to refrain from making any further such references.
