To conclude our interview series at .conf25 in Boston, we speak with Mike Fanning, Splunk's CISO.

We get insights into the CISO role, emphasising the high scrutiny and top-down support he faces. Mike highlights the integration of Splunk's security operations with Cisco's, noting the importance of direct feedback to product teams. Fanning stressed the need to scale with technology rather than people, focusing on predictable processes and incident response. He addressed cultural challenges, particularly defining Splunk's role within Cisco's broader security organization. Fanning also noted the inherent threat landscape from Splunk's SaaS customers and the importance of centralised security services.
