HELLO! here I am hosting my first ever PRIDE MAP with @skullykings!
Been A Son was written by Kurt Cobain as a response to misogyny and how girls are mistreated and blamed for their own mistreatment. Over time, the song has also been adopted by the queer community as many intersections and bits of relatability are found in the song, especially for afab people. The lyric “she should’ve been a son” is relatable to not only girls facing misogyny but many queer people as well. It could have many queer readings; perhaps a trans boy is closeted and resentful of having been assigned female at birth, wishing he’d “been a son” or perhaps a trans girl is facing mistreatment from her parents or even internalized transphobia — “she should’ve been a son.” Any afab of any gender, gender expression, or sexuality can relate to the feeling of extra pressure put upon them and perhaps the resentment for being afab.
With that said, this is a pride vent MAP where you can express your anger, sadness, spite, and the hardship you’ve faced for being queer and show yourself powering through it. A lot of pride MAPs, for good reason, show only the positive, wholesome side of being queer which is a good thing, I would just like to provide people the space to use an activist song to express some more intense emotions that come with being part of an oppressed group. Minority stress and internalized queerphobia are real struggles we go through and it’s important to have an outlet for those things.
