The build centers around a 1959 Ford Prefect 100E—a car that started its life as a humble family vehicle but is now getting a bold second chance. Instead of a simple restoration, Matt Urch from Urchfab takes things much further, transforming it into a custom race-inspired machine.
Like many long-forgotten cars, this one was in rough shape. Years of sitting idle had taken a toll—rust, worn-out parts, and a damaged interior meant there was no shortcut. The only option was a full teardown, stripping the car down to its bare shell before rebuilding it piece by piece. What follows is a long, demanding process involving cutting, welding, and fabrication, requiring both patience and precision.
One of the most impressive aspects of this build is the fusion of old and new. Matt combines the vintage body of the Prefect with a Mazda MX-5 chassis, blending classic design with modern performance. Using stick welding, he carefully constructs and reinforces the structure, even creating a completely new internal framework to restore strength and stability.
The project also highlights the importance of materials, particularly steel, which remains the backbone of automotive construction due to its strength and versatility. After the structural work is complete, the car is primed and painted, not just for appearance but also to protect it from future corrosion.
