Italian Americans are furious after New York City’s immigrant-enclave map included neighborhoods such as Little Palestine, Little Pakistan and Koreatown—but left out the historic Little Italy.
In this reaction, Rafi Harel examines the backlash facing Mayor Zohran Mamdani after Italian-American leaders and New York City Council members accused his administration of ignoring one of the communities that helped build New York.
The map identified 30 immigrant communities across the five boroughs, but it also omitted prominent Italian, Irish and Jewish neighborhoods. Mamdani responded that the map was not intended to be exhaustive, said it originated under the previous administration and promised that Little Italy and other communities would be added.
