This was recorded by students at Pennsylvania State University in 1970. A group of mostly black students wanted to place the American flag on the quad at half mast in honor of the death of Malcolm X.

Another group of students, mostly Vietnam Vets, protested this.

These kinds of conflicts were going on on campuses and in the streets of America on a daily basis. People were yelling at one another. Sometimes the situations turned violent and the feeling of violence was often in the air..

This clip captures the intersection of political tensions during a time of social upheaval in the U.S., especially around issues of race, patriotism, and civil rights.

The two sides using the American flag in this debate likely represented broader movements.
Supporters of Malcolm X were challenging the flag as a symbol of American policies and practices they saw as oppressive, particularly to African Americans. Malcolm X was a powerful voice for Black empowerment and was critical of U.S. systemic racism. For these students, taking down the flag might have symbolized rejecting a country they felt had historically marginalized and exploited Black communities. The act of removing the flag could have been seen as a protest against inequality, police brutality, and the Vietnam War, which disproportionately affected people of color.

“Patriots” viewed the flag as a symbol of American ideals, democracy, and freedom. Keeping it flying was a show of respect for the country, its traditions, and the military, particularly in the context of Vietnam. For them, the flag represented a unity that should transcend racial divisions, and taking it down could have been seen as disrespectful or even anti-American.

This conflict over the flag symbolized deeper debates about what America represented at that moment—was it a place of unfulfilled promises or a country still worth believing in despite its flaws?
The protest over the flag involved intense debates with students engaging in demonstrations and perhaps even institutional interventions by the university. The tensions reflected the polarization over civil rights, the Vietnam War, and national identity. Debates like this one were happening on many college campuses across the U.S., as some young people became more and more vocal in demanding changes.
