This is just one part of the journey of bringing Umberto to life for my short film “SHRIMP!”
I’ve used just about every tool along the way—starting with pencil sketches, moving into digital drawing, then building him out in both 2D and 3D. What began as a simple idea grew into a story and an entire world, shaped by my own life experiences. Since the subject of bullying is personal to me, developing Umberto has been as cathartic as it’s been creative.
For the previs motion test, I even used image-to-video in Veo 3—wildly inspiring tools that make the process feel limitless.
Umberto’s turned out to be quite a character. And as Andrew Stanton said, “The greatest stories infuse real life into fantasy, so audiences feel something true beneath the spectacle.” That’s the fun part—building a world that’s both imaginative and personal.
Keep creating, keep experimenting, and use whatever tools help you tell your story.
Cheers!
