👁️Making of: "Playing God" at Annecy 2025
Step behind the scenes of "Playing God", one of this year's most remarkable stop-motion animation projects, directed by Matteo Burani and produced by Studio Croma Animation and Autour de Minuit. ✨
A clay sculpture comes to life, aware of its imperfections, and draws us into a world where human fragility fuses with the magic of stop motion. Created using a combination of three animation techniques – puppets, clay and pixilation – the film is a tribute to creation, skilled artistry and raw emotion.
Screened at the Midnight Specials at Annecy 2025, "Playing God" reveals the meticulous work of a team of six passionate artists with over 90 hand-sculpted puppets and all done with frame-by-frame animation. Pier Danio Forni’s music complements every gesture and breath, bringing this fragile and poetic world to life.
🕯️ "Playing God" is an ode to imperfection, humanity and the bond between creator and creation. A handcrafted animation experience where every gesture counts, every emotion is sculpted, and every character exudes their inner soul.
This Making of is brought to you as part of our collection in partnership with The Animation Showcase, bringing together films presented at Annecy 2025 and now eligible for the Oscars season.
